From the late 1970s to the mid 1990s, the punk music scene burgeoned in the East Bay Area.

From Berkeley to Rodeo, hundreds of anxious and depressed teenagers flocked to 924 Gilman Street, ground zero for the movement, to form punk rock bands. The DIY-style club incubated the talents of hitmakers like Green Day, Rancid and Operation Ivy.

Having collected extensive archival material from the period, Corbett Redford, who was part of the scene and attended the same high school as Green Day member Billie Joe Armstrong, chronicled the stories of hundreds of bands with his documentary “Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk,” which will be out in New York on Friday, July 28.
