Dom Flemons first came to our attention as part of the Grammy-winning, Black string band known as Carolina Chocolate Drops (which also gave us Rhiannon Giddens and Leyla McCalla). As a solo singer, guitarist, banjo player, and all-around scholar of old Americana, Flemons has dubbed himself “The American Songster,” and has performed songs rooted in blues, early gospel, ragtime, proto-country, and other forms of old-time folk music. But he’s also written his own songs, like an ominous ballad called “It’s Cold Inside”, where Flemons sings of loss and dreams denied, a sense of not belonging and a life lived on the margins. Dom Flemons, the preservationist, storyteller, and instrumentalist, brings his one-man Americana road show to Joe’s Pub on Tuesday, May 16.
