Sometimes a concert is more than a concert – it’s a moment in history. Edmond Dede, who was born a free man of color in Louisiana in 1827, wrote an opera called Morgiane. It is believed to be the earliest complete opera by a Black American composer, but because Dede died before its intended premiere, it was never performed. The manuscript was lost for over a century, until it was rediscovered in 2010. Now, 138 years after Dede wrote it, Morgiane is being performed for the first time. On February 5, Opera Lafayette and OperaCréole present Edmond Dede's Morgiane in New York, at Jazz At Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall.
