El Khat at Drom

Apr. 11 | 7:30 PM | $27+

The Yemeni trio called El Khat is based in Berlin, where they’ve created a style of music they call junkyard funk. It’s rooted in traditional rhythms and scales from Yemen, but played on instruments that the members of El Khat have largely designed and built by themselves. It’s not a new idea – used oil cans have become a traditional percussion instrument on the Arabian peninsula, but El Khat takes it way further, creating guitar-like instruments out of what looks like an anti-freeze container or a metal mixing bowl, and using electronics connected to tin cans, among others. The resulting sound is rooted in tradition but definitely not traditional. They play on Saturday night, April 11, at Drom.
