Democrats Gain Ground in New York and New Jersey Congressional Seats

Residents of New York and New Jersey cast their votes Tuesday for dozens of seats in Congress, including a handful of closely watched races that helped Democrats flip the House of Representatives.

Here are the results for the region's most contested races.

NEW JERSEY

• Garden State voters gave incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez a third term. It was a contentious race in which former pharmaceutical executive Bob Hugin used more than $30 million of his own money to mount a barrage of attack ads about the senator's federal corruption trial, which ended in a hung jury.

• Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jay Webber in the state's 11th District, which has been under Republican control since 1984. The seat was up for grabs after 12-term Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen announced his retirement.

• In the 7th District, Tom Malinowski, a former State Department official under Barack Obama, defeated five-term Republican incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance in one of the most closely contested House races in the country.

• Picking up another seat for Democrats, State Sen Jeff Van Drew defeated staunchly pro-Donald Trump rival Seth Grossman in southern Jersey's 2nd District. Van Drew's win marks the first time in more than two decades that Democrats have won control of the seat. Republican Rep. Frank LoBiondo announced his retirement after 12 terms.

• As of 2 a.m. Wendesday, the 3rd District House race remained too close to call. Two-term Republican incumbent Rep. Tom MacArthur is running neck-and-neck in the race against Democrat Andy Kim, a former national security aide to Obama.

NEW YORK

• Army veteran Max Rose beat the odds and defeated U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan, unseating the only Republican member of New York City's congressional delegation in the state's 11th District, which covers Staten Island and a small part of Brooklyn. The map below shows where he won.

• Democrat Antonio Delgado, a corporate lawyer, ousted freshman Republican U.S. Rep. John Faso. The sprawling 19th District stretches from New York City's northernmost suburbs to rural counties near Albany and was targeted as a key battleground for Democrats seeking to flip the House.

• Republican U.S. Rep. Peter King was re-elected to a 14th term in the 2nd District, defeating Democrat Liuba Grechen Shirley.

• In the 14th District, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated little-known Republican opponent Anthony Pappas. At 29, Ocasio-Cortez could become the youngest woman elected to Congress. Her victory had been widely expected since the June primaries, when she scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley.

• The closely watched congressional battle in central New York between Republican U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney and Democratic challenger Anthony Brindisi remained too close to call Wednesday morning. Each candidate had roughly half the vote with some remaining ballots still to be counted in the 22nd District.

• Near Buffalo, three-term Republican incumbent Chris Collins was holding off his Democratic challenger despite being indicted earlier this year. As of 2 a.m., Collins had a 3,000 vote lead over challenger Nate McMurray in the state 27th District.
