Summer in New York is a great time for music lovers, and lovers of free things. Because the city is full of free gigs, often in unexpected places and times. At noon on Wednesday, July 26, Eli Paperboy Reed brings his vintage soul sound to the Hugh Plaza on East 53^rd Street. Spend your lunch hour watching Reed sing his own songs that recall the music of a half century ago. Then, you’ll have plenty of time to get over to Hudson Yards for a 6pm show, also free, by Gabriel Garzon-Montano. The Brooklyn-born son of Colombian and French parents makes music that draws on neo-soul and R&B, although elements of art rock, folk, and electronica all play a part too. There are at least two chances to hear free music on Wed., July 26: Eli Paperboy Reed at 53^rd and Lex at 12 noon, Gabriel Garzon-Montano at Hudson Yards Public Square at 6PM.

Immigrants' stories have been unfolding on an off-Broadway stage in an uncommon way. One is of a doctor in her 40s who fled Zimbabwe. Another featured a Colombian woman who regretted leaving her homeland for the United States. A third entered into a marriage of convenience with an American after overstaying her visa, and then suffered a violent assault in the subway.
