Scottish composer Erland Cooper recorded his new album, Carve the Runes Then Be Content With Silence, in 2021. He then deleted all the digital files and leaving the only analog master tape – which he then buried underground, to be “recomposed,” Cooper said, by the earth itself. What followed was a yearlong search by his fans for the hidden tape, led by online clues. When it was finally found and dug up, the tape revealed a nature-inspired work for small orchestra, with poetry by George Mackay Brown, in remarkably good shape. Erland Cooper presents the live version of “Carve The Runes Then Be Content With Silence” on Oct. 1 at Le Poisson Rouge.
