Singer, bassist, and composer Esperanza Spalding shocked the music world when she won Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammy Awards, beating out Drake and Justin Bieber. She was the first jazz musician to win the award, but the term jazz doesn’t begin to cover what she does. Her work incorporates elements of pop, R&B, and classical music too. Her latest project, 12 Little Spells, is a series of 12 songs and videos, exploring the healing powers of art and how music and the body interact. Esperanza Spalding plays tonight at Town Hall.
