Feds Nudge Second Avenue Subway Phase Two Closer to Construction Start

WNYC News | Jan 7, 2022

The federal government is giving the Second Avenue subway project approval to move to the final phase of planning. It’s one step away from shovels in the ground.

The project would add three more stops along the Second Avenue route—extending the Q line from 96th Street to 125th Street in East Harlem.

The project was stalled under the Trump administration, but is once again a top priority for the federal government.

The current cost is pegged at $6.3 billion.

Half of that would be covered by federal grants recently bolstered by President Biden’s infrastructure bill.

Once construction begins, the MTA expects it could take 8 years to complete the 1 and a half miles of new tracks, and the three new stations.
