Following Protests, NYC Halts Plan To Shuffle Around 900 People In Homeless Shelters

While Mayor Bill de Blasio is standing by his controversial decision to move homeless residents out of the Upper West Side’s Lucerne Hotel, the plan is on hold, at least for now. The men from the Lucerne, who were there to reduce crowding in shelters and combat the spread of COVID, were going to be moved to The Harmonia Hotel in Midtown, and that's created a domino effect, forcing residents of a family shelter there to other locations. This decision followed a weeks-long pressure campaign from a group of Upper West Side residents who wanted the shelter gone. But now the de Blasio administration is facing pushback from homeless residents and community leaders who want him to keep the Lucerne open. WNYC host Sean Carlson and reporter Gwynne Hogan discussed the latest.
