Yesterday, Taiwanese electronics behemoth Foxconn announced new plans to build a factory in Wisconsin. The company says the move could bring 3,000 jobs and up to 10 billion dollars in total investment.
President Trump hosted Foxconn chairman Terry Gou yesterday at the White House, where the president took credit for the deal and for suggesting the new factory's location in the swing state of Wisconsin.
Foxconn says the deal is the first of many investments in the US. But the details of the project remain unclear. AÂ 2013 Foxconn plan to bring a high-tech factory to Pennsylvania, along with 500 jobs, never panned out.
Heather Long, economics reporter for The Washington Post, joins The Takeaway to explain what Foxconn’s move means for US trade policy and the politics of US manufacturing.
This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
