Pianist Fred Hersch has had a dual career as an active soloist and bandleader, and as a composer. Actually, make that a three-part career, as he’s also a veteran educator, based mostly at the New England Conservatory. All this despite the fact that Hersch has been treated for HIV since the 1980s. He spent two months in a coma in 2008, and his experiences of recovering from that led to a stage piece called "My Coma Dreams." Pianist and composer Fred Hersch leads his trio in a series of performances this week at the Village Vanguard, starting tomorrow night.
