After he left prison, Malcolm X rose quickly through the ranks of the Nation of Islam, becoming its national spokesman. In the third of five conversations, Tamara Payne explains what drew Malcolm X to the organization and how he in turn recruited others with his fiery speeches; plus, a look at his relationship with civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

Payne was the principal researcher for the new book, The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X, which her father Les Payne worked on for more than 25 years.
