In Indonesia, “classical music” doesn’t mean a symphony orchestra – Indonesia’s classical ensemble is the gamelan, which is made up mostly of bronze percussion instruments that produce a shimmery, exotic sound. Gamelan music has inspired Western musicians since the time of Debussy, and for the past 30 years, Gamelan Kusuma Laras has played this music right here in New York, usually at the Indonesian Consulate. Their performances sometimes have an informal quality, where audiences can move about, and come and go as they wish – while the musicians play well into the night. Gamelan Kusuma Laras presents this klenèngan, an informal music event in Java, and a kind of jam session, on Sat., May 28, starting at 7PM, at the Indonesian Consulate on 5th Avenue.
