Gershwin's 'Porgy & Bess' via The Met's Nightly Opera Stream

Opera may not be the first type of music you think of during Black History Month, but the Met has been home to many great African-American singers, from Leontyne Price and Robert McFerrin (who, by the way, was Bobby McFerrin’s dad) to the current crop that includes these singers, Eric Owens and Angel Blue. All this week, the Met’s free evening opera streams celebrate that history, beginning, appropriately, with Gershwin’s classic Porgy And Bess - which, by rule, has to have an all-Black cast. This performance, from the 2019-2020 season, is from James Robinson’s vibrant new production of Porgy and Bess - and is the Met’s first free HD stream of Black History Month, on Monday, Feb. 1.
