Children of world-famous musicians have an uphill battle when trying to emerge from their parents’ shadows. But Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the great Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, has proved the exception, fusing South Asian sounds with more traditional pop music songwriting and other world music traditions. She’s emulated her father’s social conscience as well: her new album is called Land of Gold and is a response to the global refugee crisis.
