The Malian guitarist and singer Habib Koite has often explored the junction of traditional West African music and North American soul and rock. He uses the Western guitar but tunes it like an African lute, and while he occasionally sings in English or French, he’s most often found singing in the Malian language of Bambara.  Koite has become one of Mali’s most successful musical exports, playing with Bonnie Raitt and Eric Bibb, among others. Habib Koite plays with his West African supergroup Bamada at Le Poisson Rouge tonight.
