Leila Adu is a New Zealand composer of Ghanaian descent who has written music for symphony orchestras and string quartets – but now she’s given the world some genuine art pop. Take this song, “Love Cells” – sells with a ‘C.’ Her velvety, soulful voice might be the first thing that strikes you, but the smart instrumental flourishes give Leila away as a composer of striking originality. Leila Adu celebrates the release of her new album tonight at National Sawdust.
