When a composer is commissioned to write a new piece of music, that commission usually comes from a performing ensemble or a grant-giving foundation. It doesn’t usually come from another composer. But during his almost four decades of being a central player on the New York new music scene, composer John Zorn has rarely done the usual thing. Now, he’s commissioned new works from the noted guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Both works, commissioned by John Zorn, will have their world premieres at National Sawdust tonight.
