In the 1960s, sax players John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders explored a spiritual, even mystical brand of jazz rooted in sounds of Africa and ideas from Asia and ancient Egypt. After Coltrane’s death, Sanders has carried on that work, and over the decades he’s been widely influential and yet has somehow remained a singular figure. Pharoah Sanders is taking part in a John Coltrane tribute concert at Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park tonight.
