The Handsome Family is a genuine family band  - it consists of the husband and wife team of Brett and Rennie Sparks. They started releasing music in the mid-90s and earned a reputation for taking a weird, gothic view of American roots music. They have occasionally shown a willingness to deliver their stories on waves of distorted electric guitar, but for the most part they rely on moody lyrics and even moodier acoustic playing. TV viewers may know this song, “Far From Any Road,” as the theme song for season one of the TV series True Detective. The Handsome Family plays Oct. 12 at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, and Oct. 13 at Public Records in Brooklyn.
