Helado Negro at Brooklyn Steel
May 5. $25-30. 8PM.

Since 2009, the Ecuadorian-American songwriter Roberto Carlos Lange has been putting out records under the name Helado Negro, making dreamy, sophisticated pop here in New York. But his album Far In, released last fall, was at least in part about leaving New York. He’d gone to Marfa, Texas for a short stay in March of 2020 and found himself stuck there for several months. And that feeling of being unmoored and away from home seems to be at play in his new single, “Ya No Estoy Aqui,” or “I’m no longer here.” Helado Negro’s soothing vocals and the song’s midtempo dance groove give a sense of comfort mixed in with the melancholy.
Helado Negro plays Thurs. night, May 5, at Brooklyn Steel.
