The early music group Hesperus has assembled a collection of medieval music, mostly from the 14^th and 15^th centuries, to function as a soundtrack to the silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The movie is a classic, starring Lon Chaney, and the soundtrack is pretty classic too, with works by early composers like Hildegard von Bingen or Guillaume Dufay… also lots of traditional anonymous dance tunes. The kinds of music you might’ve heard on a 15^th century Parisian radio station. The soundtrack for The Hunchback of Notre Dame by the band Hesperus is now available for online viewing – both the movie and the music – until February 13, as part of the Music Before 1800 series.
