The Queens rapper Homeboy Sandman has been making his own quietly infectious, smart, and often witty observations for more than a decade now. He has, at one point, turned a creatively sampled bit of the song "America The Beautiful" into a deeply ironic enumeration of all of this country’s supposed benefits; on the other hand, he recalls the good-natured, sample-heavy sounds of bands like De La Soul in songs that gently skewer hip hop conventions, like this track, which asks the rappers on YouTube why they have to look so mean all the time. Homeboy Sandman plays on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Baby's All Right.
