In 1871, five young girls were sent by the Japanese government to the United States with the diplomatic mission of learning Western ways and help nurture a new generation of enlightened men to lead Japan. Janice Nimura’s book, Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back, recounts the trials and tribulations the girls faced on their journey, and they changes they brought to Japan.
