How Life In Russia Has Changed Since 1995

The Leonard Lopate Show | Feb 10, 2017

Lisa Dickey joins us to discuss her book Bears in the Streets: Three Journeys Across a Changing Russia. When Dickey traveled across Russia three times in 1995, 2005 and 2015, she checked in with friends she made in 11 different cities to see how their lives had changed over the years. From the caretakers of a lighthouse in Vladivostok, to the Jewish community of Birobidzhan, to a farmer in Buryatia, to a rap star in Moscow, Dickey profiles a variety of people and offers a nuanced portrait of life in modern Russia.
