WNYC News | Oct 1, 2015

Hundreds of mourners turned out at the funeral for Evan Murray, a star high school quarterback who collapsed after taking a hit on the playing field last weekend. The funeral was held Thursday morning at Faith Discovery Church in Washington Township, Warren County.

Classes were canceled at Warren Hills Regional High School on Thursday. School officials say the football team will continue its season Saturday when it hosts Voorhees High School in a game that was initially scheduled for Friday night.

Murray's teammates wore blue shirts and black ties to the funeral, and many mourners were wearing the school's blue and white colors.

Authorities said the 17-year-old died from massive internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen. Murray managed to walk off the field, but collapsed as soon as he reached the sideline on Friday night. Murray also played basketball and baseball at his school.

Murray is the third high school student who died from injuries from football this month. Tyrell Cameron, a 16-year-old student from Louisiana died on Sept. 4, and Ben Hamm, 16, from Oklahoma died on Sept. 11.
