The Hunt for Nazi Gold

A popular legend in southwestern Poland tells of a train packed with looted treasure, hidden underground by the Nazis in a vast network of tunnels created at the cost of countless lives. There are no surviving plans or documents to explain what the tunnels were for, but a subculture of hobbyist Polish treasure hunters has developed theories as its members continue to search for the legendary gold train. Jake Halpern, who wrote about the treasure hunters for The New Yorker, reports.
