NYCHA's Fixes Might Require Even More Money Than de Blasio Thinks

WNYC News | Mar 12, 2019

A new report suggests that New York City may have to spend even more money than previously thought to fix its public housing.

The city is investing $4.2 billion over the next decade to address issues with lead paint and heat and elevator outages. The federal government is not providing any additional funds. But the Independent Budget Office estimates that may not be enough to meet the requirements called for by the agreement with the federal government.

During a City Council hearing on Monday, Kathryn Garcia, interim chair and CEO of the New York City Housing Authority, said that the de Blasio administration will attempt to win more federal money for the system.

"We still have a lot of advocating to do, both at the state and federal level," she said.
