ICE Helped To Protect NYPD Station Houses During Protests

WNYC News | Jun 9, 2020

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were protecting NYPD precincts during the recent protests, alarming immigration advocates. During one protest, ICE agents briefly detained an American citizen they thought to be armed. And now, police are confirming what protesters say they were seeing on the ground: ICE agents were providing security outside NYPD precincts over the last several days. A police spokesman says they were not doing immigration enforcement and the arrangement has since ended. Councilmember Carlos Menchaca says this raises questions about whether the NYPD is following a city law limiting cooperation with ICE. He also wants to know why the department can't secure its own facilities despite a $6 billion budget.
