Illinois Moves to Protect Undocumented Immigrants With Trust Act

For his first couple years in office, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner established himself through a clash with the Democratically controlled state legislature. Under his watch, the state entered a budget crisis that did not end until this past July, when the state legislature overrode Rauner’s veto of the state budget.

On Monday, Governor Rauner signed into law a bill called the Trust Act, which has the backing of a broad bipartisan coalition. The bill, which was passed by the state legislature this spring, makes it so that state and local officials in Illinois do not have to comply with requests from federal immigration authorities to continue holding detainees suspected of being undocumented.
