On The Front Lines of The War Against Boko Haram

The Takeaway | Apr 16, 2015

Since 2009, Nigeria, one of the wealthiest countries in Africa, has been facing an insurrection from the terrorist organization Boko Haram. The Nigerian government has struggled to defeat the group in its northern stronghold.

The struggle has been exacerbated by the country's interior divisions. The north is poor with little industry or natural resources, while the south is relatively wealthy. Nigeria also has little government presence or infrastructure, which made it easier for Boko Haram to seize territory and implement a wave of terror through bombings, beheadings, and abductions.

New President General Muhammadu Buhari has promised to eradicate the threat, but it remains to be seen whether his campaign will be successful.

VICE News Correspondent Kaj Larsen is the only journalist on the front lines of the Nigerian offensive. He discusses Nigerian's campaign against Boko Haram with an inside look at fight on the ground.

Check out some photos of Larsen's reporting and a trailer for his documentary below. Click here to see the full documentary.
