It's Not Only a Play — It Has a Movie Star

WNYC News | Sep 12, 2014

Movie and TV stars often appear on Broadway, but this fall season is especially packed. Here's the lineup:

Glenn Close returns to Broadway after a 20-year hiatus for a revival of  “A Delicate Balance” by Edward Albee.

Bradley Cooper will play the title role in a revival of Bernard Pomerance’s "The Elephant Man."

Hugh Jackman will star on Jez Butterworth's "The River."

Michael Cera is in Kenneth Lonergan's "This is Our Youth," which opened on Thursday.

Mia Farrow will be in Love Letters by A.R. Gurney.

Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are in “It’s Only a Play,” the Terrence McNally comedy that is in previews and grossed more than $1 million last week.

Ewan McGregor, Cynthia Nixon and Maggie Gyllenhaal are in The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard.

And the list goes on.

One reason for the star-studded lineup is the fact that stars help drive ticket sales. But Elisabeth Vincentelli, theater critic for the New York Post, said actors get something out of it too. “They get to do things that are much more challenging and interesting,” she said.
