Jersey Girls Don't Pump Gas - But Should They?
As of January 1, 2018, New Jersey now stands alone as the only state in the country where it's illegal to pump your own gas.
Every few years, state lawmakers revisit the idea of doing away with the full-service gas law in New Jersey, citing savings of up to seven cents a gallon. But most drivers have voiced their opinion: Keep the change; we'll stick to full service.
So it's time for a low-stakes debate: Should New Jersey join the other 49 states with self-service? Or is it just a Garden Stater's divine right to never touch a pump?

@WNYC I understand that NJ creates jobs by employing gas pumpers, but in these days, it's as useless at toll booth attendants #mywrongopinion

Some lawmakers point to job loss as a reason to keep full-service. Here are some #s reported by @northjersey: "Gas stations around the state employ about 5,000 attendants who pump gas, most of them part time..." https://t.co/utpwF4wKwk

@WNYC #MyWrongOpinion on a cross country trip with my sister, her “Nj girls don’t pump gas” was annoying. I moved to NJ about 7 years ago and now “dread” having to pump my own gas. Plus: NJ is providing jobs for others!

I’m a Jersey girl who’s lived in NY for 20 yrs. At 1st I was excited to pump my own gas- forbidden fruit Now the honeymoon is over I only go to stations that pump it for me. Provides jibs & makes life for pleasant. Don’t change NJ -keep pumping our gas! #MyWrongOpinion
