Singer and guitarist John Paul White won a Grammy as half of the duo known as The Civil Wars. The group’s songs had echoes of old American murder ballads and tales told in deep Appalachian hollers where the sun rarely shined. But The Civil Wars broke up and White started a solo career in 2016, and has continued writing music with long deep roots in America’s musical past. His latest album is called The Hurting Kind. He plays tonight at Public Records.
