Johnny Mathis is now performing at Avery Fisher Hall. He talks with Richard Pyatt about his early career and singing in New York City and the people he met. Also covered are the challenges of singing in different music halls and transposing the recording performance to the stage.

Mathis discusses his early shyness and being thrust into the public eye when he had became addicted to pep and sleeping pills. He says he had to grow up and that he was a boy trying to hide. Now he says he's got no reason to hide. He has stopped smoking and gotten into good physical condition. He and Pyatt discuss his most recent album, Going Home.
