The composer Joseph C Phillips Jr leads a big ensemble called Numinous, which combines elements of modern classical composition and jazz improvisation. He unveils a new work this week, a mono-opera called The Grey Land, which follows one black mother as she makes her way in a divided America with her son. The themes of race, class, and power play out in a multimedia work for 28 piece orchestra, soloist, narrator, film, video and dance.
