Detroit techno began in the 1980s with a small handful of musician/producers who’d fallen under the spell of the German electronic bands like Kraftwerk and the emerging house music scene in Chicago. Juan Atkins (aka Model 500, Cybotron, and Infiniti), along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, formed the group the Belleville Three, which is usually considered the foundation of Detroit techno. All three went on to have important solo careers in the style, and Juan Atkins is still playing live sets. Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins returns to Brooklyn’s Good Room on Friday, Jan. 14.
