Julian Assange Is 'More or Less With Hillary' on Her Email Troubles
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange says Hillary Clinton's email problems are the result of too much information being classified. He says the former Secretary of State and current Democratic presidential candidate is a victim of the government's preference for secrecy in the full interview with WNYC's Leonard Lopate.
When asked why diplomatic cables about seemingly mundane things are classified, he responded:Â
"People just get into the habit of [classifying things]. That's something that's happened to a degree with this Hillary Clinton email scandal. I'm more or less with Hillary on that. There's obsessive overclassification. It's basically because you can get into real trouble - as Hillary is seeing - for under-classifying. So everyone thinks 'Well what trouble can I get in for overclassifying? And if I write top secret on something or secret then maybe people will bother to read it because they think the classification level means the material is important.'"
Assange spoke with WNYC's Leonard Lopate from the Ecuadoran embassy in London, where he's living under asylum from sex abuse charges in Sweden. The Clinton campaign has been plagued for months by allegations that she improperly used her private email for State Department business.
