Jupiter & Okwess at Elsewhere - Rooftop
July 30. 7PM. $27.40
The band known as Jupiter & Okwess is from Kinshasa, in Congo, and is led by the singer Jupiter Bokondji. They play a striking mix of high-energy dance music, drawing on Congolese rhythms as well as funk, Afropop, and occasional bits of samba, New Orleans jazz, and soul. The mix of musical languages is matched by Jupiter’s singing, which is mostly in Lingala but includes phrases in English, French, and German, the latter the result of having spent some of his childhood in Berlin as the son of a diplomat. Jupiter & Okwess play on July 30 at Elsewhere.
