#3652: Just Looping Strings
A looping sound of cellos and violins runs through all three of the works on this New Sounds program. Listen to many Maya Beisers, as she layers and loops her cello in a work written for her by Michael Harrison, “Just Ancient Loops” in the tuning system called Just Intonation (sometimes, “Pure Intonation,” which goes back to Pythagoras.) Maya Beiser performs "Just Ancient Loops" with Bill Morrison’s film tomorrow, 10/23 at MOMA.
There’s also music for one violin and tape loops in the late American violinist and composer Michael Galasso’s “Scenes.” Plus, hear one violin seemingly playing follow-the-leader in a looping fashion in Anna Clyne’s work “The Violin,” which features violinists Cornelius Dufallo and Amy Kaufmann. All pieces have visual components; Harrison’s music goes with a Bill Morrison silent film and “Scenes” were for dance theatre pieces. Anna Clyne’s work is actually a collaborative multi-media work with stop-motion animations by Josh Dorman, which don’t work so well on the radio. But here's a trailer of these animations:
