Listen to choral music by Meredith Monk and Minnesota-based composer Jocelyn Hagen on this New Sounds. Also, Kent Tritle, the leader of Musica Sacra, music director at St. John the Divine, and WQXR Music host, joins John Schaefer. Together they discuss the evolution of new choral works, starting with Morton Feldman’s “Rothko Chapel” and how Meredith Monk brought the idea of the voice as instrumental color instead of carrying text.
Listen to Jocelyn Hagen’s “Amass” for divided chorus, cellos, guitar and percussion, revolving around a concept of interreligious harmony, with texts of translations of spiritual poetry by Daniel Ladinsky from his book “Love Poems from God” along with the traditional texts of the Roman Catholic mass. Plus, plus works by Meredith Monk & her ensemble, as well as Feldman’s “Rothko Chapel.”
