As Congress fails to fully re-fund the CHIP program that provides healthcare to millions of children, a new study out this week shows just how dire the state of children’s health is in America.

The research was published in the journal Health Affairs on Monday, and it shows that, when looking at other wealthy, democratic countries, a child born in the US has a 70 percent greater chance of dying before adulthood.

Ashish Thakrar is the lead author on that study. He’s an internal medicine resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and he discusses who the most vulnerable groups are and why, and what needs to happen to fix the trend.
