The Colombian band La Perla consists of three women who sing and play drums. Sounds simple enough, but the trio draws on a huge range of traditional South American rhythms, as well as elements of rap and Caribbean music. Their songs, delivered in an apparently traditional style but with a healthy dose of punk attitude, often have lyrics that deal with Indigenous rights, the strength of Latina women, and respect for the land. The Colombian trio La Perla plays on Tuesday night at Joe’s Pub.
