Lakecia Benjamin – "Mercy" (Soundcheck Podcast)

Sax player Lakecia Benjamin grew up playing salsa and merengue in Washington Heights. She also rapped and listened to funk, played with Stevie Wonder and Missy Elliott. But Benjamin is primarily known as a jazz musician these days, although as you might imagine she takes a pretty wide-angled view of jazz. Her last record, Phoenix Reimagined, is a live reworking of her 2023 album Phoenix, which earned three Grammy nominations. The new version has picked up two more Grammy nods. Lakecia Benjamin and her band play a live set in-studio as the latest installment of the Soundcheck Podcast.
