The Law of War Manual, Revised at Last

On the Media | Jul 22, 2016

In June 2015, the Department of Defense published its first-ever “Law of War Manual,” a comprehensive how-to guide which, among other things, included some troubling language about the treatment of wartime journalists. Last August, we spoke to Defense Department General Counsel Charles A. Allen about our concerns, and he told us that revisions were being made. We followed-up with him and Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook in January and were told that the revisions would be released soon.

Now, one year after the initial release, the Law of War manual has officially been revised with new language aimed at the explicit protection of journalists. Bob speaks again with Peter Cook and Charles A. Allen to discuss the changes and the process.
