The Creek Nation has had a complicated relationship with its Black members. The tribe once enslaved Black people, but later recognized Black Creeks as full members of the Nation. That changed in the 1970s when the rights of Black Creeks were revoked by tribal leaders. Author Caleb Gayle joins us to discuss this complex piece of history that's central to his new book, We Refuse to Forget: A True Story of Black Creeks, American Identity, and Power.
