Leyla McCalla first came to notice as part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Grammy-winning group that resurrected the tradition of Black string band music. Now, she’s playing banjo, cello, and singing in three languages in her latest solo project, called Breaking the Thermometer. It’s based on the archives of Radio Haiti, and the songs - in Kreyol, French, and English – are a celebration of the brave couple who founded the radio station and gave a voice to the people. Leyla McCalla plays Friday and Saturday night, Oct. 7-8, at Harlem Stage.
