Lionel Shriver Imagines a Dystopian Future for the American Economy

Award-winning author and journalist Lionel Shriver talks about her latest novel The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047, which is set in the near future and tells the story of a wealthy family torn apart by an unprecedented global financial crisis. In 2029, the U.S. dollar has plummeted in value and has been replaced by a new global currency called the “bancor.” When the Mandible family members learn that their inheritance is worthless, they must deal with the consequences and fight for survival.
