Looking Back at 100 Years of WNYC

Specials | Jul 8, 2024

Past and present WNYC staff Sara Fishko, Karen Frillman, Brigid Bergin, Andy Lansett and Terrance McKnight join Brian Lehrer for a tour of key moments in New York history. We also hear historic news reports that aired on WNYC, including the earliest piece of tape in our archives of a ticker tape parade honoring Charles Lindbergh, a Great Depression-era program that lists the prices of food, Bob Dylan's first ever New York radio interview, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia reading a Dick Tracy comic book, and WNYC journalists running toward the Twin Towers to report on 9/11.

This program aired as the first part of our July 8 WNYC centennial celebration programming. Click to hear the second part "A Reimagining of WNYC's First Broadcast."

WNYC is celebrating its centennial with live events, audio programming, public art, a city-wide storytelling initiative and partnerships with other New York institutions. Visit wnyc.org/100 to learn more about how you can join the celebration of WNYC’s first — and next — 100 years.
